Each year the Astros Foundation and Shriners Hospitals for Children host the annual College Classic. In 2020 we saw a face off between three teams of the SEC and three from the Big 12. From the Big 12 we had the Baylor Bears, the Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns. Representing the SEC we watched the Arkansas Razorbacks, the LSU Tigers and the Missouri Tigers.
Some of the biggest names in the draft have been known to participate in this tournament. There 85 participants from the Classic drafted into the pros in 2019. Through the years of the tournament we’ve also see players such as David Price, Trevor Bauer and Gerrit Cole.
Shriners Hospitals began as a small research effort with only $12,000. Now, with a much larger budget, they are able to fund research, shared facilities and many training fellowships.
Researchers at Shriners have made significant breakthroughs in all four of their chief service areas, which are orthopedics, burns, spinal cord injury, and cleft lip and palate repairs. The lives of many children have been improved by this research, from being able to stand and walk, to simply being able to smile. Of course, when these kids can smile, we all do.
Events such as the College Classic help Shriners raise the funds they need to continue this vital research. The support of the community and even the conversations that can be started at the private luncheons or behind home plate provide are invaluable to advancing the conversations about research in these fields.
So, whenever you hear the tickets are on sale for the Classic, pick yours up. Whether you go to one game, or get every ticket you can behind home plate and a full table for a first pitch luncheon, your support is invaluable to millions of kids that might not find help otherwise.
